The two-box headphone amplifier, one for the dedicated power supply and the other housing the amplification circuitry, keeps transformer fields away from the critical amplification stage and results in exceptionally low noise floor. Outputting up to 15 volts into 32 ohms, the EF5 has more than enough potency to power even the most high impedance headphones. And if you feel you need even more juice simply flick the gain switch to high, though we’re sure you won’t be needing it for all but the most demanding of headphones.

A single pair of phono (L/R RCA) jacks provide the inputs for the HiFiMAN EF5, allowing it to be connected to any DAC, CD player or similar source.

A slightly warm presentation that works well with almost all headphones, vocals are rendered beautifully with appropriate fullness and richness. The mid-range is a tad forward without being dominating in the slightest. Extension is excellent, with the highs sitting appropriately in the spectrum; not pronounced nor recessed. A key benefit of the hybrid design is that the HiFiMAN EF5 still offers plenty of detail and precision, the accurate 3D soundstage being particularly enthralling.
